Hike Pico Pequeno
Climb the active crater mouth!
An evenly impressive hike but less high is the Pico Pequeno top. This is the actual crater mouth where the last eruption in 2015 occurred. Pequeno refers to small, as this is the little brother of Pico do Fogo. Walk through the vineyards, climb up on the rocks and descend through volcanic black sand.
Good to know: The duration of the trek takes about 2 hours. A basic physical condition is required.

Pico Pequeno
Pico Pequeno is a smaller volcanic cone resting on the slopes of Pico do Fogo ( Cape Verde's highest peak).
Formation
It was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1995 and is essentially a secondary vent of the main Pico do Fogo volcano. The area around it is covered in dark lava fields, creating a striking contrast with green vineyards of Chã das Caldeiras.
Why choose Hiking to Pico Pequeno?
Hiking Pico Pequeno trail is much shorter and less demanding than the steep climb to Pico do Fogo, making it ideal for people with limited time or with moderate fitness levels taking approximately 2 hours to finish.
It offers a great experience to those who are not used to hiking at great altitude levels.
Chã das Caldeiras
At the base of the volcano is the village of Chã das Caldeiras, where locals have rebuilt their lives after several volcanic eruptions. This village is the starting point for hikes and is known for producing local wine and coffee grown in the rich volcanic soil. Despite the risks, the people here live closely with nature and make the most of the land.
