Pico do Fogo volcano

Pico do Fogo is the tallest mountain in Cape Verde and an active volcano located on Fogo Island. It reaches a height of 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) and is the highest point in the country. The name means "Peak of Fire," reflecting its volcanic origin.

Volcanic Activity

Pico do Fogo's last eruptions happened in 2014-2015. These eruptions have shaped the island, covering the land and houses with ash and lava. The volcanic soil is very fertile, which helps grow grapes and coffee, two important crops on the island. Fogo wine is very popular among travellers and locals.

Hiking Adventure

Hiking to the top of Pico do Fogo is a popular activity for visitors. The hike starts from the village of Chã das Caldeiras, which is located at the base of the volcano. The climb is tough but rewarding, offering incredible views from the summit. Along the way, you walk through fields of volcanic ash and rock. Once you reach the top, you can see the whole island and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

Chã das Caldeiras

At the base of the volcano is the village of Chã das Caldeiras, where locals have rebuilt their lives after several volcanic eruptions. This village is the starting point for hikes and is known for producing local wine and coffee grown in the rich volcanic soil. Despite the risks, the people here live closely with nature and make the most of the land.
