Vila do Maio

As the heart and soul of Maio, Vila do Maio is where life's rhythm unfolds.  A place where the echoes of legends like Cesaria Evora echo, the soulful Morna music fills every hook and corner. Experience the profound sense of 'Sodade' as you settle into a local café and watch a stunning sunset on the quiet beach.

Landscape

Maio's island has dramatic terrains marked by untamed mountains, secluded sandy shores, volcanic formations, and rugged coastlines. Although arid, its charm is undeniable. Majestic peaks like Monte Branco stand tall but do not hinder the passage of clouds, leaving the landscape thirsty. Hidden gems like the Ponta Preta Beach beckon with their untouched beauty, but caution is advised when swimming due to potent currents.

Historically, Maio's inhospitable terrains delayed its colonization. However, the protected bays, once favoured by pirates, now house the tranquil harbours of Vila do Maio, standing as a testament to the island's growth and evolution.
