Nesting Turtles in Cape Verde
Cape Verde, is one of the most important nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the world. Every year, between June and October, thousands of female turtles return to the beaches of islands like Boa Vista, Sal, and Maio to lay their eggs.
They dig deep holes in the sand, and lay around 80 to 100 eggs. After two months, tiny hatchlings break through the sand and make their way to the ocean, guided by the moonlight.
Cape Verde is one of the top nesting spots in the world for these turtles. But they face many risks—from pollution and construction to illegal hunting. Thankfully, local groups and volunteers work hard to protect them, and visitors can even join turtle walks or help release hatchlings.
