São Pedro bay
São Pedro is a small fishing village located on the southwestern coast of São Vicente right next to the international airport of Cesaria Evora. The village is best known for its beautiful beach, which is named after the village itself. The sheltered bay offers golden sands and clear turquoise waters. It is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying water sports such as windsurfing. Kitesurfing is prohibited due to the short distance of the airport runway.
The village has a few small hotels in town and the only resort on the island, Foia Branca lays a bit further down the beach. The charming colorful houses and fishermen's boats on the beach create a picturesque setting. The locals remain their traditional fishing village atmosphere, bringing in their daily catch. A great spot to experience the authentic Cape Verdean fishing culture.
Hike to the lighthouse Dona Amelia
A hike worth the walk is the one to the Farol of Dona Amélia. The lighthouse lays on the rocky end of the Sao Pedro bay. The hike takes about 50 minutes from the beach and has stunning coastline views all along. Entering the lighthouse and climbing up all the way to the tower isn’t for the faint hearted but the reward is well worth it. The path leading to the lighthouse can be tricky and is therefore best visited with one of our local guides.
Turtles in Cape Verde
The real highlight of the bay is snorkeling with sea turtles. Did you know that Sao Vicente is the only place in Cape Verde where you can swim with turtles and are 100% guaranteed to see them? The turtles are swimming freely in the bay and are attracted by the sound of the fishermen's boats. The only species that hatch on land in Cape Verde are loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta) but during the snorkeling you’ll see green and leatherback turtles.
